We are making three types of plantings: |

The flood plain is composed of sand and cobbles of various sizes in various proportions |
The water table in the bottom land rises and falls with the river level |
The bed of the river, when wet, is the home to the Macro Invertebrates, favorite food for the fish. Keeping the bed wet maximizes the food resources. At 250 cfs the entire bed of the river is still wet |
High water saturates the benches. |
At 186 cfs the bed is mostly wet. |
At 85 cfs the bed is mostly dry. |

Tamarisk, or Salt Cedar, was introduced from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in the Middle East at the end of the last century as a bank stabilizer. It is very aggressive and in many places along our rivers has overtaken the cottonwoods and other native species. When cut, the stumps re-grow many small sprouts. However it you break off these sprouts every few weeks, the roots eventually die. |

HELP US! If groups traveling the Chama take time to pluck the sprouts from the Salt Cedar stumps, victory will come sooner. The first strand we are working to eradicate is on the low bench immediately downstream of the Ward Ranch. Take care to avoid the young cottonwoods on this vega. The Salt Cedar stumps are toward the back of the bench, at the point where it rises to the next bench where the building is located. |

UNDESIRABLE INVASIVE SPECIES |
Poles are essentially "cuttings" of whole trees. We chop the tree off at ground level and then drop it in a deep hole, all of the way down to the water table. |
Seed Balls are small lumps of soil and native seeds which are scattered on the ground through out the area. When there is enough rain the ball dissolves and the seeds germinate. |
Root Balls are the traditional large mass of dirt and roots at the base of transplanted trees and shrubs. |
